The country is currently conducting a pilot program involving 1,500 households in five South Korean cities getting 1 Gbps service for about 30,000 won, or less than $27 a month. According to OECD data, South Korea already ranks between second and third on the list of the world's speediest countries, with most South Koreans currently paying about $38 for connections around 100 Mbps. Compact geography and multi-tenant living makes moving to 1 Gbps obviously easier than it would be in larger countries, with the elimination of last-generation DSL being among the top priorities.
