Jozy Altidore got the assist on Dempsey's goal in the 55th minute as the Americans claimed their first victory ever against host Italy. Dating to 1934, the Americans are 1-7-3 all-time in the series against the four-time World Cup champions.
"The goal is to qualify for the World Cup," Dempsey said after the game. "So it's important to come to places like this and play big teams on their own soil and get results. At times it wasn't pretty, but we grinded out the result tonight."
Dempsey, who has 16 goals this season for Fulham, is only the fourth U.S. player to score against Italy.
